Innovation lead

We’re looking for an innovation lead who will support Plexal’s cybersecurity programmes and build our regional presence in Manchester.


As the innovation lead, you’ll need to work proactively to seek out and connect to the wider cyber and technology ecosystem by scouting for the best startups. You’ll design innovation-related content and identify mentors, collaborators and advisors to engage with our government and industry-facing innovation and challenge-led programmes and activities.

You’ll continuously monitor the cyber startup and innovation landscape, seeking out opportunities to engage with promising innovators and entrepreneurs and identifying opportunities to build deal-flow and the innovation pipeline for our clients. You will also proactively monitor cyber and emergent technology trends and market needs, to guide our work and shape our innovation strategy as we grow.

You’ll act as a relationship manager to build partnerships and commercial relationships to help grow our initiatives and Plexal’s innovation business in the region and across the UK.

You’ll report to Plexal’s director of innovation, working collaboratively with the London-based HQ team as well as our in-region delivery teams to support our programmes.  



  • Successful track record in building effective trust-based relationships with a wide range of senior internal and external stakeholders (e.g. startups and corporate clients) but also understands the practicalities of working in a small and growing company.
  • Strategic awareness across the cyber market and the sector to provide an outside-in perspective to clients with regards to emerging market needs, trends, opportunities and technologies of interest to explore.
  • Commercial awareness and an aptitude for building relationships, nurturing opportunities and structuring mutually beneficial business partnerships.
  • Excellent listening, facilitating and influencing skills, including influencing senior leaders and external stakeholders and negotiating to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Demonstrable experience of enabling successful collaboration and contributing to the success of a core delivery team.
  • Engaging and accurate written work, using your own intuition and judgement. Written work should be suitable for advising and making recommendations to senior leaders.
  • Demonstrable personal resilience and the ability to remain focused on the bigger picture, responding to challenges in a calm and measured manner.
  • Evidence of flexibility in working in a programme environment with a matrix structure, with changing organisational and operational requirements.
  • Demonstrable ability to work proactively, with the ability to plan and organise your own work, with reference to appropriate strategies, policies, processes and protocols.
  • Innovation / startup / venture background and  passionate about emerging technology. You will ideally have some domain expertise or interest in cyber.
