THE ROLE

 

Plexal is an innovation centre and coworking space that believes in the power of collaboration. Our innovation team delivers programmes to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing society – starting with social inclusion, cybersecurity and mobility. And as well as hosting events – anything from hackathons to large conferences – we’re home to over 600 innovators who are working in areas like mobility, AI, healthtech, cybersecurity, fintech, the Internet of Things, VR and more. Our members enjoy community events, access to the Eagle Lab at Plexal makers’ space and services designed to help them scale.

Our team is a group of passionate innovators bringing diverse skills from startup ecosystems, intrapreneurship, emerging technology, social and policy innovation, science and technology clusters and R&D. Our collective track records include supporting over 150 large organisations with their innovation agendas and enabling the growth of over 400 startups with organisations such as Nesta, Vodafone, Capgemini, EY and the EU. We’re growing quickly and are looking for a talented and experienced business development lead to join us.

As the business development lead, you will focus on the cybersecurity sector. You will take ownership for generating and converting revenue opportunities. You will work collaboratively with other members of the Innovation Services and Plexal executive teams to identify leads, build proposals, design programmes, determine sales strategies and win work.

You will lead engagements with prospective clients, constantly evaluating the needs of these organisations and working with the commercial team to refine propositions to meet these. You will act as a trusted advisor, ensuring that our propositions both delight our clients and deliver Plexal’s commercial ambitions.

You will also play a key role in supporting the growth of the innovation services team, helping to shape the strategy, culture, operations and products of a young and fast growing business.

The position is focused on business development and sales and you will be expected to make an immediate impact on the sales process and conversion of opportunities. With the complementary set of skills that you will bring to the team, you will be expected to train other members of the team and establish a best practice for business development.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Lead business development and proposal efforts including:
  • Demonstrate a high level of industry and customer understanding. You should be able to articulate a clear vision of where Plexal can deliver unique value. You should be able to become a trusted advisor for the customer
  • The candidate is expected to engage and build strong working relationships across mid and senior-level (CXO) decision makers
  • Innovate and drive key opportunities to maximise revenue opportunity
  • Targeting large-scale, high-value growth opportunities that produce results in short term with a long-term perspective, and focus on immediate ROI
  • Provide accurate and timely forecast information to enable senior management to understand and respond correctly to the current circumstances with the customer. Build a comprehensive account /territory plan designed to solve customer problems and achieve targets
  • Create business cases and resource plans to enable informed internal decision making
  • Determine and implement an optimal approach for the sales process (including ownership) and operational requirements
  • Develop and refine propositions to better meet the needs of customers, while utilising the capabilities that exist within the innovation services team
  • Generate and deliver client proposals
  • As a thought leader, maintain awareness of industry trends and authoring of articles when required
  • Contribute to the wider team including recruitment, capability and strategy development

 

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

 

The key to this role is developing long-term relationships with corporate clients and being viewed as a trusted advisor. The business development lead  will have a proven background in B2B business development (ideally within cybersecurity or a high-tech environment) with the ability to work with clients from concept creation through to implementation.

You will have excellent sales support and presentation skills with the ability to write proposals and shape solutions. You will draw upon proven project management skills to identify and execute the best approach and accurately estimate cost, timeframes and resource planning.

The business development lead will have a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent field/work experience. You will have a proven track record in establishing credibility with key decision makers through demonstrating strong interpersonal communication skills. You will have an in-depth knowledge of customer business needs and solving their business problem.

The business development lead has a strong understanding of technology and key trends such as IoT, virtual reality, augmented reality, cybersecurity and data analytics with a passion for how these technologies can transform lives and create new markets.

You will have established interpersonal skills, strong strategy development, programme management and relationship management skills and be capable of influencing across multiple groups and/or organisations.
